Travis Scott Cleared of Criminal Charges in Connection with 2021 Astroworld Tragedy

Astroworld tragedy

According to Reuters, Travis Scott will not face criminal charges related to the Astroworld incident that occurred in November 2021, resulting in the tragic deaths of 10 individuals, including a 10-year-old boy, and leaving thousands injured. The conclusion of the 19-month investigation came as a grand jury in Harris County, Texas chose not to indict the rapper.

In a statement provided to Newsound, Kent Schaffer, Scott’s attorney, expressed the following:

“After careful consideration, it has been determined that my client, Travis Scott, will not be charged with any criminal offenses or found guilty of any wrongdoing concerning his involvement in the AstroWorld festival.”

Today’s decision by the Harris County District Attorney reaffirms what we have maintained throughout this process—that Travis Scott bears no responsibility for the AstroWorld tragedy. This aligns with the findings of investigative reports from various media outlets, as well as federal and state government investigations, which have consistently placed the blame for event safety failures on organizers, operators, and contractors, rather than performers. Despite inaccurate and unfounded accusations, Travis Scott halted the show on three separate occasions and remained unaware of the unfolding events. With this chapter now closed, we hope that government efforts will be directed toward preventing future heart-wrenching tragedies like Astroworld from ever happening again.

Originally scheduled to take place on November 5 and 6, Astroworld 2021’s second day was canceled due to a mass casualty incident at NRG Park in Houston. The incident occurred when a large group of audience members surged towards the stage, causing panic and resulting in injuries. Emergency services transported 17 individuals to hospitals, including 11 who experienced cardiac arrest. Among those injured, a 10-year-old was reported, while the ages of the deceased ranged from 14 to 27, as detailed in a report by The New York Times.
