“I am currently working on a project that delves into the intricacies of the human brain and our perception of reality. ‘Road to Joy’ is intricately linked to this theme. It explores near-death experiences and the distressing condition known as locked-in syndrome, where individuals lose the ability to communicate or move. It’s an incredibly frustrating situation. While there have been noteworthy books and films on this subject, in our narrative, the caretakers of our protagonist manage to find a way to awaken him. Thus, the lyrics depict the process of reawakening one’s senses, returning to life, and reconnecting with the world.”
While “Road to Joy (Bright-Side Mix)” is one of the final tracks to emerge for the I/O album, it draws inspiration from a previous project. Initially, Gabriel had started working on a song called “Pukka” during the OVO project, which served as the catalyst for revisiting and developing the current track. Recognizing the infectious groove, Gabriel desired to infuse more rhythm and energy into the album, leading him to experiment with different ideas alongside Brian Eno. The resulting song captivated him with its excitement and vigor, filling a void he felt existed in the record.
