Anti-Flag has spoken out about the unexpected disbandment that occurred last week via two separate statements. The group’s lead singer, Justin Sane, whose actual name is Justin Geever, has responded to an accusation of sexual assault made against him, which he firmly denies. The remaining three members of the band have issued a separate statement, explaining that given the allegations, dissolution was their “only immediate course of action.” Full versions of the statements are available below.
Last week, when Anti-Flag announced their split, fans and certain publications drew connections to a podcast episode. In this episode, a woman claimed that she was sexually assaulted by the lead singer of a politically-charged punk band. Though there’s no concrete evidence pointing to Geever, the episode’s details led members of the Anti-Flag subreddit to suspect Justin Sane could be the individual in question.
In a statement made available to Newsound and later shared on Instagram, Justin Sane stated:
I’ve been recently accused of sexual assault and I want to firmly state that these allegations are entirely false. I have never been part of a non-consensual sexual relationship, nor has any woman ever confronted me after a sexual encounter to say that I acted without her consent or that I violated her in any way. Now, after taking some time to come to terms with the initial shock, I am issuing this statement to clarify the matter.
Sexual assault is a severe issue, causing immense damage to its victims. Throughout my adult life, I have dedicated myself to advocating for these victims, as well as those suffering from oppression and inequality, who are subjected to humiliation and abuse. My actions and beliefs have always aligned with this stance. The claims made about me are in stark contrast to what I stand for and how I have lived my life.
Regarding Anti-Flag’s dissolution, we collectively decided that it would be impossible to carry on under these circumstances.
I extend my gratitude to my family, friends, and the multitude of fans, fellow musicians, and bands who have offered their support and assistance.
Pat Thetic, Chris “#2” Barker, and Chris Head expressed:
One of the fundamental beliefs of Anti-Flag is to support and believe all survivors of sexual violence and abuse. The recent claims against Justin blatantly contradict this principle. Hence, we felt compelled to dissolve the band as our immediate response.
These allegations have left us shocked, perplexed, saddened, and profoundly heartbroken. Despite the seriousness of the charges, we can’t reconcile them with the Justin we’ve known for the past 30 years, someone who has never shown violence or aggression towards women. This ordeal has fundamentally disturbed us.
We acknowledge and apologize if our reaction wasn’t as swift as some might have expected. We are all navigating uncharted waters here, and it’s taking time for us to come to terms with the situation.
Being part of Anti-Flag was an honor for us. As we seek our way forward, we send our wishes for healing to all survivors.

If the allegations are true, it’s good the band took a stand. But innocent until proven guilty, right?
very serious accusations… and they’re dealing with it as they should. standing by victims. props to them.
man, grew up on their music, hard to swallow all this. But i hope the truth comes out, whatever it is…
wow… this came out of nowhere… seen them live a few times, Justin always seemed like a decent guy to me.
this is just so heartbreaking. They were an inspiration to many, hope justice prevails.
let’s not jump to conclusions. Let the investigations take its course. If he’s guilty, he should pay, but if he’s innocent, this will ruin him.
