Mitski has released further information about her forthcoming album, initially introduced via a voice memo this past Monday. The new album, titled The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, is slated for release on September 15 through Dead Oceans. Mitski today presented her new single, “Bug Like an Angel,” along with an accompanying music video helmed by Noel Paul. The video portrays an intoxicated woman stumbling down a street into the embrace of a choir group, Mitski herself being a member, clad in a blue robe and clutching an acoustic guitar, reflecting the song’s themes of self-destruction and community. The music video is available for viewing below.
The album’s first track is “Bug Like an Angel.” The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We is composed of 11 songs in total, and was recorded at Nashville’s Bomb Shelter Studios under the guidance of regular collaborator, Patrick Hyland. The songs, inspired by a broad range of influences from Arthur Russell to Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western scores, were written by Mitski in “small creative spells over the past few years,” as she drew inspiration from her surroundings.
In a newsletter update today, Mitski wrote, “Many aspects of working in the music industry and being a public figure feel contrary to my personality. I’m sure you’ve seen me grapple with this at times. However, I’m extremely fortunate to have the resources and time to create music and an audience like you that offers me the chance to perform. Ultimately, I’ve realized that I deeply wish to continue creating music and I’m prepared to accept the challenging alongside the wonderful—similar to any job, relationship, or worthwhile pursuit in life. Thus, I renegotiated my contract with my label and decided to keep producing records. I sincerely thank you for your patience and support as I navigated this journey. I love you!”
